What to include

Wi-Fi problems are almost entirely about the specific building, so a question with these four things in it can get a real answer, and one without them can only get a generic one:

• Roughly how big the house is, and how many floors. Including whether there is a basement you use.
• Which room is bad, and where the router is. Both, because the relationship between them is usually the answer.
• What is between the two — as far as you know. Stud walls, brick, concrete, a bathroom, a chimney breast.
• Your internet provider and roughly your plan speed. This determines what hardware is allowed and whether the plan is even the constraint.

If you can run a speed test standing next to the router and again in the bad room and include both numbers, that alone narrows it down enormously. The method is on our room-by-room testing page.

Corrections

If something on this site is wrong, out of date, or a product has been discontinued, please say so — that is one of the most useful emails we get. Include the page and what is wrong with it. How corrections are handled is set out on our editorial policy page.

What we cannot help with

Being honest about the limits saves everyone time:

• Billing or outages with your internet provider. Only they can resolve those, and we have no relationship with any of them.
• Warranty claims or returns. Those go to the retailer or the manufacturer.
• Business, campus or multi-building networks. This site is about homes, and pretending otherwise would not help you.
• Requests to review a product. We do not run hands-on testing and do not accept review units — see our methodology.
• Paid placement, sponsored posts or link insertions. We do not sell any of these, so there is no need to ask.
